Yep, I jumped on the bandwagon and have no regrets! I really enjoyed creating these DIY faux ceramic vases and I hope you do too. If I could guess, my bet is you have a few old vases lying around your home simply collecting dust. At least that was the case for me. I always love to up-cycle when I can and give old (especially kind of lame) objects new life so I knew I would just love this project.
They are so simple to make and can be incorporated in to all types of home decor. For myself, I decided to go for a more boho color palette, but the possibilities are endless depending on your style.
Supplies:
- Glass or Ceramic Vases. I got mine at a local thrift store – I would highly recommend this option!
- Paint. Colors: Mesa Taupe, Whisper White, Orange Flambe, and Ash Blonde all from BEHR that I got at Home Depot.
- Baking Soda
- Paint Brushes
- Bowls or something to mix the paint mixture in
- Popsicle Stick or something to stir the paint mixture with
Step 1: Gather Your Vases
Like I mentioned earlier, you might have a few vases lying around your home that need some love. I found a few around my house but also made a trip to my local Habitat for Humanity Restore (aka the best place ever). All my vases were either free or under $1!
Step 2: Create the Paint Mixture
I got my paint from Home Depot, but you can also use acrylic paint that you can get from your local craft store. I chose to use the colors: Mesa Taupe, Whisper White, Orange Flambe, and Ash Blonde all from BEHR.
Once you have your paint, pour a little into one of the bowls. There really is no exact science to this but just remember – a little goes a long way and you can always make more if you need to.
Add in a spoon full of baking soda. Again, no exact science, but the goal is to end up with a paste-like substance.
Note: I’ve heard of other crafters using baking powder instead of baking soda. Personally, I prefer baking soda which I feel is the most commonly used. However, feel free to experiment with both if you’d like.
Step 3: Paint Your Vases
Use the mixture you just created to now paint your vases! I also attempted to paint a little on the inside, but I wasn’t too picky since I knew I was going to put something in them.
For some of my vases, I waited to paint the bottom portion so I could have a place for my fingers to hold on to. I let the vases dry and then went back and finished painting the rest of the vase.
Note: Some of the lighter colors, like the white and ash blonde, needed two if not three coats. Depending on the colors you choose you might need to add a few extra layers.
Once I added all the layers, I went back through with my paintbrush, which by now was pretty much dry – do not dip it back into the paint – to add a bit more texture.
Let them completely dry and you have now up-cycled your boring old vases into something new and fresh!
